Title: Sustainable Management and Utilization of Tropical Bamboo in Yunnan Province of China

Yunnan Province of China possesses great biological and social diversity as one of the twelve global biodiversity hot spots and a region hosting many different minority groups. Bamboo is a rich resource for the province. Yunnan has about 220 bamboo species. Among which there are a number of tropical sympodial bamboo with great potential for fostering environmental protection and socio-economic development. Tropical sympodial bamboo is also an ideal material to complement sustainably managed tropical timber. However, very little attention has been given to development of the tropical bamboo sector in this province so far.

This project aims to contribute to sustainable rural development in the project area through sustainable management and diversified applications of the versatile tropical sympodial bamboos. The specific objectives of the project are to develop innovative processing technologies of priority tropical bamboo species for industrial utilization; and to promote the diversified applications of tropical bamboos for sustainable rural development through demonstrations, capacity building and training Main outcomes of the project will be innovative bamboo processing technologies and a sustainable bamboo-based rural development model.

The project will be implemented in Yunnan Province of China. The project will be administered by the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) in close collaboration with the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and local partners in the province. The total budget of the project is USD 815790 for a period of three years.
