Bamboo: Trade, Development and the Environment

Background
The international workshop is one of the major events of the 5th China Bamboo Cultural Festival which will be held in Nanping, Fujian Province in southeast China 22-23 October 2006. It is expected to have over 100 participants from research institutions, universities, industries, trading companies, government sectors, NGOs, and diplomats from Beijing. The theme of the workshop is: "Bamboo: Trade, Development and the Environment."

Introduction to the 5th China Bamboo Cultural Festival in Nanping
The 5th China Bamboo Cultural Festival will be co-sponsored by the Chinese State Forestry Administration (SFA), the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) and the Fujian Provincial Government. The theme of the Festival is to develop bamboo culture, promote bamboo industry and build up a new rural prosperity. The Festival, covering a wide range of events and activities related to bamboo development, will provide good opportunities for technical and commercial contacts, product information and knowledge exchange by means of the international workshop, product exhibitions and field visits.

Call for papers
There will be invited Keynote presentations. All other oral presentations will be selected based on the subjects given in the following three aspects.

Environment
Biodiversity conservation
Standards for sustainable bamboo management and bamboo certification
Bamboo for carbon sequestration
Bamboo for water and soil conservation
Bamboo as a renewable energy source
Development
Sustainable livelihoods for reducing poverty
Community development
Product and market development
Industrial development
Trade:
Commodities and supply chains development
Markets and trade development
Business environment and policy
Market information and services development
All papers shall be eligible for inclusion in the workshop proceedings ( written in English), and sent to Ms. Hao Ying. Please download the Guidelines for Preparation of the Summary and Guidelines for the Preparation of the Full Paper. The workshop organizer aims to make the workshop proceedings available to delegates at the time of registration at the festival. Proceedings will also be made available on the INBAR website.

Venue and time
The precise venue and date of the workshop will be announced in due course.

Provisional Program of the Festival
During the Workshop, various kinds of activities relating to bamboo will be arranged, such as:
Opening Ceremony
National Bamboo Products Fair
The international workshop
Bamboo planting in a new bamboo garden
Visits to Bamboo plantations/ manufacturing factories

Languages:
The working languages will be English and Chinese for the international workshop.

Registration
People interested to participate in the Workshop shall complete and submit the Registration Form with one page CV to Ms. Hao Ying before August 31, 2006. Registration is free of charge.

Costs and Fees
All the travel expenses (international/national) to/from Nanping City, Fujian Province should be covered by the participants.

The local costs of invited participants for hotel rooms, food and transport during the 2 days of the Festival can be covered by the Organizing Committee of the Festival.

The international workshop is free of charge for registration and participation.

Post workshop fees should be borne by participants. The fees are USD $550 for 5 days to cover local transportation, hotel and foods. Detailed information is available upon request. Registration before August 31 2006.

Transportation
Local transportation in Nanping city and for the field trip during the festival arranged by the organizers will be freely provided to all invited participants.

Hotel and food:
The detailed hotel address and contact information will be announced in due course.

Free food vouchers will be provided during the 3-day event.

31 August 2006: Receipt of Registration Form for international workshop and post workshop tour; deadline for receipt of summary of paper;
31 August 2006: Deadline for receipt of full paper;
30 September: Deadline for receipt of PP presentation;
